Lauren HurstProfessor LarsonBIBL 105 – Introduction to Bible StudyDecember 19, 20131 Timothy 2:8-15“In every place of worship, I want men to pray with holy hands lifted up to God, free from anger and controversy. And I want women to look modest. They should wear decent and appropriate clothes and not draw attention to themselves by the way they do their hair or by wearing gold or pearls or expensive clothes. Because women who claim to be devoted to God should make themselves attractive by the good things they do. Women should learn in silence and submission. I do not allow women to teach men or have authority over them. Let them listen in silence. Because God created Adam first and then Eve. And it wasn't Adam who was deceived by Satan. The woman was deceived and the result was sin. But women will be saved through pregnancy as long as they continue to live in faith, love, holiness and modesty. Honor and recognition in case of success." That advert appeared in a London newspaper and thousands of men responded! It was signed by the famous Antarctic explorer, Sir Ernest Shackleton, and that was what made the difference. If Jesus Christ had made an announcement seeking workers, the announcement might have looked something like this: “Men and women sought the difficult task of helping to build My church. You will often be misunderstood, even by those who work with you. You will face constant attacks from an invisible enemy. You may not see the results of your work, and your full reward will not come until all of your work is completed. It may cost you a lot of paper to explain how a local church should be run and to assert your authority as a servant of God. In 1 Timothy 2:8-15 Paul encourages Timothy to confront the false teachers who had infiltrated the church of Ephesus. In context, Paul is dealing with deceived false teachers who teach false doctrines (1 Tim. 1:3, 7). Prior to 1 Timothy 2:9-15, Paul instructs Timothy regarding how men and women who claim godliness should conduct themselves in the church while among false teachers (1 Timothy 2:1-10). .Paul writes 1 Timothy giving instructions to Timothy, a young man who responded to Christ's call to help build His church. Timothy was one of the special assistants of the apostle Paul.1 Timothy, one of the three pastoral letters, is instructing Timothy on how to lead and instruct the church in the city of Ephesus.
