Four planes hijacked and crashed into buildings on the east coast. A car crashes into a wall during a routine Sunday ride. Homes no longer have a set of encyclopedias. A person who will no longer have to carry CDs with them. Magic is making a comeback in popularity. Through tragic events and technological breakthroughs, such as 9/11, the launch of Wikipedia, the launch of the first iPod, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, and the death of Dale Earnhardt, 2001 is an unforgettable year for most Americans. Many people think of one important thing that happened in 2001, September 11th. September 11, 2001 was a tragic day for many Americans, nearly 3,000 mothers, fathers, sons and daughters were killed in a terrorist attack on the World Trade Center in New York. Completed in 1973, the Twin Towers were 110 stories tall each, more than 50,000 workers and 200,000 tourists visited each day (History.com staff). In September 2001 the Twin Towers became the target of a massive terrorist attack which cost the lives of many people. Many things have changed because of this horrible day. Things like the Secure Flight program which checks whether any person deemed to pose a risk. Advanced blast control and carry-on baggage screening for any type of threat. Wikipedia was founded by Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger to become the largest and least expensive encyclopedia. Wikipedia ties into the story by being the first online Wikipedia and obviously the least expensive. What it has left behind its legacy is the fact that people can change it and it is not reliable to get truthful information. The impact it has on us today is that it is still the largest Wikipedia online and the least expensive because it is free.
