Topic > Importance of Social Learning Theory in Nursing

Educational theory relevant to change management would be social learning theory. In this theory the leader or educator has the responsibility to serve as a role model. Social learning theory has been applied to nursing education to maximize the use of support groups and address psychosocial problems. As an example from research it has been shown that nurse managers understanding their responsibilities and roles in promoting a positive work environment leads to improved competence, learning and satisfaction (Kane-Urrabazo, C. 2006) Bandura states that people do not need to experience things directly to learn and that substantial learning occurs by observing the behavior of others and what happens to them. Learning can be seen as a social process and other individuals provide compelling examples of how to act, feel and think. The principle of Role Modeling is to allow the student to observe the work of a well-trained nurse and thus enable the student to promote the professional role. This not only involves learning clinical skills, but also learning professional attitudes and interactions with patients and other healthcare personnel (Quinn 1991). For this theory the role model is a central concept and, for example, a nurse with little experience would usually be mentored by a more experienced nurse who displays desirable behaviors and professional attitudes. In relation to nursing education, the advantage of social learning theory is its focus. on the social aspect of learning that occurs in a social environment, recognizing the complexity of the person and the environment. Callery 1990 states that complexity itself makes interaction challenging and intervention complicated. The environment would be...... middle of paper ....... Set of principles of adult education centered on the political fact that there are fundamental differences in adult education. the legal rights of adults and children. Educational philosophy defined in terms of self-directed learning, student-centered teaching, and lifelong learning. Self-direction and individual development are consistent with humanism. Promotes autonomy by giving the student responsibility for learning. Andragogy encourages diversity of individual learning. Andragogical coherence reflects the nurse-patient relationship. Andragogy can be understood as a means by which adult education must focus more on method than on lessons. Self-assessment, simulations, role-plays and case studies are the most useful of these types of training. Instructors take on the role of a resource person or facilitator instead of taking on the usual role of a grader or teacher.
