American citizens lost their sense of safety and security after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 (9/11). The United States transformed into a transformed nation, and a vital debate arose between civil liberties and national security. The September 11 attacks should not have been surprising, given that Islamic extremists had warned for years of their hatred and intent to kill Americans. According to the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks on the United States (2004), hundreds of people were killed and thousands injured during various attacks on the United States and several U.S. embassies during the 1990s. Furthermore, failures of management, capacity, policy and imagination occurred across government. No action was taken against these acts of violence, and due to selfishness, the ultimate price was paid on 9/11. The Fourth Amendment is among the original amendments known as the Bill of Rights.
