We are all unique, but some crucial factors determine our standing in society. Differences in skin color are not the only cause of discrimination. Ideas and ways of living change our level and the way in which we are accepted by those who "lead". Our disparate ideas, about things like family and love, are a major source of hatred between cultures. Using symbolism and characterization, Carter explores the views on family, discrimination, and the nature of a different culture in his novel The Education of Little Tree. They believe in a strong family relationship, not just between people living under the same roof. Grandfather said that before him "relatives" meant all the people you understood and agreed with, so it meant "loved people".
