Tragedies have occurred over time. It is seen in our daily lives and has been depicted in writings, plays and films and within those tragedies is a tragic hero. When the word hero comes to mind, people tend to think of someone like Superman or Batman, someone brave and with heroic qualities, who performs heroic deeds. But a tragic hero couldn't be further from that. A tragic hero is usually someone of high rank or a member of the royal family. They have a tragic flaw or personal weakness that leads to their downfall. The idea of a tragic hero comes from ancient Greek works, developed from their religious stories. Many of these works were written by Sophocles; an ancient Greek playwright. Sophocles' work consisted mainly of tragedies, Aristotle - a Greek philosopher - looked at the works of Sophocles and defined tragedy and the tragic hero. In Sophocles' play Antigone, the stubborn King Creon is the tragic hero. His stubbornness and concern for what others think of him lead to misfortune. While in William Shakespeare's Tragedy of Julius Caesar the honorable Brutus is the tragic hero. Brutus' honesty and overconfidence lead to his death. In these two plays the tragic heroes are very different, but both are still considered tragic heroes. Both have tragic flaws, but Brutus is still considered an integrateable man despite his flaw, while Creon is considered dishonorable because of his flaw. Both Brutus and Creon stood up for what they believed was right, but Brutus is the more tragic of the two. In the play Antigone, King Creon is the tragic hero. His tragic flaw is his stubbornness and pride. His stubbornness leads to Antigone's imprisonment and ultimately suicide. ...... half of the sheet ......ut. They feel sorry for him because his stubbornness caused the death of his family, but they also feel afraid for what happened to him. They think that if Creon was a king and something so horrible could happen to him, what is there to say that something so horrible couldn't happen to an average citizen, they will try to adjust their lives so that something like that doesn't happen to them. It makes them look at the moral aspects of their life and makes them want to change, so they won't be stubborn and proud and end up like King Creon, and that's exactly what a tragic hero should do. Sophocles wrote the play Antigone to convey to the audience the moral and what a tragic hero should do, and King Creon accomplishes this best, that's why Cron is the best illustration of a tragic hero.
