Over Thanksgiving break I was able to interview Jennifer Thorpe-Moscon, Ph.D. She works in the field of social psychology and is also vice president of marketing and research for Emylee's Body Care, a company that creates organic and cruelty-free products for body, skin and hair. Dr. Thorpe-Moscon works in New York City and was previously an adjunct professor at New York University, where she earned her PhD. in Psychology. She was introduced to her by my brother Adam, who served his mission in New York City. We had a problem trying to match our schedules, so we had to arrange the interview via email. But this was a great opportunity for me to learn more about psychology and gave me many different ideas about what I wanted to do in the future. At first I thought psychology was just a specific career choice. I didn't know there were so many different types of psychologists out there. So the first question I asked Jennifer was: What is social psychology? She responded by saying, “In general, social psychology is the study of people and their interactions in groups of various sizes. Social psychology can also examine how groups and societies interact with each other, focusing on the behavior of the individual rather than society as a system. It is a vast field that has countless applications in everyday life." To me this sounds a bit like humanistic psychology which focuses on the client's feelings and thoughts and helps them understand what their problem is. I was really intrigued by this connection because I've written about how humanistic psychology is my favorite type of psychology. Another question I asked Jennifer was: What kind of person would be so... middle of paper... ... I wanted to ask her this question so I could try to narrow it down a bit. He responded by saying that “for those who may not want to follow the traditional academic path, it may be difficult to find information or opportunities to gain non-academic experience.” He advised me to find a social psychology program and advisor that are a good fit for your interests. He also told me that one of the greatest resources is the Association for Psychological Sciences. I really enjoyed reading Jennifer's responses and getting to know her a little more via email. Now I have a deeper sense of a career I've definitely thought about in psychology. I think entrusting us with this task is a really good idea because there is a difference between simply learning about the different types of psychologists versus talking to one in person or via email.
