Water is an essential natural resource for all living organisms, large or small. It is used for multiple purposes such as drinking, hygiene and cleaning. On a more ecological note, without water there would be no fish or wildlife and plants would not be able to grow (Perry, 2002). Since it is a renewable resource, something that can be reused over and over again, the quality of the water is very important. Water can be collected from the ocean, lakes, rivers and/or streams; this makes it very difficult to keep track of what is happening inside it. The degradation of lake and river waters appears to have increased significantly in recent years (Miller, 1971). Not knowing what's inside can be harmful to the human body. Low water quality can be a major health risk concern due to all the pollutants that may be present.
