When my great-grandmother passed away, I wanted to give back to the place that took such good care of her. Making a quilt for my senior project gave me the chance to help seniors who are in the same place my grandmother was. It also gave me a chance to improve my sewing skills and learn how to make a more complex quilt. By making a quilt and donating it to Le Chateau Nursing Home, I learned new sewing skills and felt like I was making a nice donation to a local place. My project was to make a quilt and donate it to a local nursing home. I had planned to meet Carla Bower, a local quilter, and discuss where to meet to work on the quilt and what types of fabric and materials I need to get started. The quilt I made is made up of 25 blocks, 4 pieces of fabric in each block, 2 main borders and a solid color backing. I've made simple patch quilts before, but I wanted to take it a step further. My quilt has smaller fabric pieces and more complicated instructions than I'm used to. Carla helped me understand the steps by showing me how to iron and degrease in a certain way to make it as good as possible. I know the nursing home I donated it to quite well. My grandmother was there for a few months and they were very kind to her and I'm happy that I was able to give something back to the current residents. I started at Joann Fabrics trying to figure out what fabrics I wanted to use. My mother took me there and helped me figure out what fabrics to buy. I was having trouble deciding what fabrics to buy, so I used my quilt book as a reference. My mother pointed out that there were owls on the border, so she helped me find my border which was off-white with multi-colored birds and flowers. I wanted to make 2 different block patterns, so I needed to find 8 different fabrics to use for the... center of the paper... it will help me in the future. For my resume I can note that I have sewing skills as one of my qualities. This will give me more job opportunities in the sewing/crafts field. Completing this quilt showed me that I might want to look for work that includes sewing. My career that I'm focusing on right now is baking and possibly opening my own bakery. Improving my sewing skills with this project that I may include in my future baking. I have the necessary skills to make tablecloths, curtains or decorations for my bakery. Learning new sewing skills and donating my quilt to a local nursing home made me feel accomplished. By finishing my project, I felt good about myself knowing that I had returned the place that gave love to my grandmother when she was at her worst. This was the best project I could have made for myself and duty to make my senior project.
