I was able to better understand how easy it was for English laws to change on a case by case basis and see how Virginia changed so many English laws not long after the first colonists arrived. Furthermore, reading this book helped me understand the reasons for the changes. Life in Virginia was different than life in England, giving them the need for different laws in certain situations. Not everything in Virginia may be the same as in England. Another thing this book helped me see was how different things were then compared to now. The laws have changed so much and we have an organized system to maintain them. Furthermore, it appears that many of the laws and court cases of the time corresponded to jobs and the economy. Finally, each section helped me understand how men and women were treated differently. Initially, men and women were punished equally for having sex outside of marriage, but later in the book, women were held accountable and men got away with it.
