Gambling is the act of investing money in the desire to get more in return, usually by chance or skill. The tantalizing dish of gambling has been around for centuries, dating back almost 2,000 years, when gambling dice were found in Egyptian tombs. Gambling has since been used for betting and racing games, eventually leading to the first "casino" ever conceived in Greco-Roman times. The hope of a great reward for a small loss is and will always be highly tempting in the eyes of the world. However, due to the addictive qualities of gambling; it has been outlawed in many parts of the United States. In the 1930s, after the first legal casino opened in Nevada and after the earning potential was realized, more and more states began opening such establishments. In 1988, thanks to the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act, casinos were legalized on Native American land reservations. Since then, gambling has been degraded due to its negative connotation and stigma. Gambling should be legalized at the federal level in the United States in order to raise living standards in economically depressed areas, create thousands of jobs, and reap economic benefits from tax dollars, tourism, and high employment rates . Gambling has been shown to increase financial potential and importance in regions where it has been legalized. The standard of living increases thanks to the presence of a casino in the area. This is because casinos attract big spenders and investors to the city. Not to mention the rather large police forces attracted to the crime scene near the casinos. This increased security likely reduces the crime rate in most areas with gambling establishments. Other wealthy homeowners and citizens are also enticed to reside nearby and have fun... middle of paper.... Another secondary problem with these gambling sites is that they are all operated offshore and abroad, meaning that the United States does not profit from any activity on these websites, not only does this deal a major blow to the American superpower, but it puts illegal money into the pockets of another nation or private companies. With both supporters and opponents of gambling legalization having been thoroughly sifted through, it is easy to see why many are rallying for federal legalization. The pros easily outweigh the cons in this situation. Increased employment rates, tax profits and the higher level of standardization of life form a solid foundation that covers almost all personality defects that can accompany gambling addiction. The evidence presented makes federal legalization of all forms of gambling easily favored over federal criminalization.
