Topic > Destiny, Discipline and Competition in Virgil's Aeneid

During their travels the Trojans often played and had competition, this principle of honor and competition would have developed a sort of mastery within the nation. But even so competition is a catalyst for anger and hatred that can make men's blood boil, so did it build or destroy the Roman Empire? In both cases it happened, which improved men's strength through athletic competition and grew culture immensely, but it also inspired competition that had the ability to ruin people's love for each other. Furthermore, this competition has still inspired Western culture today with the Olympics and sport. Aeneas' men were inspired and motivated in their competition which caused them to push and work harder than their normal abilities would allow, so this competition helped people work harder than anyone thought possible. While the side effects of things like this might be problematic, the good that comes from it outweighs the problems, and it is a principle that nations rightly seek. In conclusion, the competition of the Romans inspired men and women to go beyond their natural abilities and do great things for their nation, proving to act as a kind of masterful competition against their own nation.
