Mimicry involves deception and imitation; words that perhaps shouldn't be used in the fish world. However, mimicry is a common act among fish species and involves the ability of one species to evolve to resemble another species with the goal of increasing its own chances of survival. In the fish world, it is typical to see fish burrowed into the ground or take on a coloration that makes it difficult to distinguish between the fish and its surroundings. It is also very easy to see a fish take the shape of another fish species. Considering how widespread mimicry is among fish species, a common question often asked is whether the similarity of one species to another species has any detectable effect on the survival of both species involved. About 60 species of coral reef fish are believed to mimic another species. of fish in the marine environment (Moland et al., 2005). There are different types of mimicry among fish species, driven by different purposes. An ally of mimicry is protective resemblance which, in most cases, is mistakenly used as a synonym of the former. With mimicry, one fish tries to resemble another with the goal of being noticed, while with protective resemblance, a fish tries to hide. Aggressive mimicry is a form of mimicry in which a predator or prey takes advantage of its similarity to a third party. An example of this form of mimicry is observed in the anglerfish. The anglerfish has a small worm-like moving organ that it wiggles on a thin rod in front of other fish. Small fish that mistake this bait for their natural prey and thus get close are quickly eaten by the anglerfish. Ultimately, such species are able to survive better than other species of the same type without the mutation genes. This could be called natural selection. Mimicry between fish species can be remarkably precise, which highlights the extraordinary ability of natural selection to shape living species into entirely new species or into species that accurately resemble other species. As predators become more adept at the act of hunting prey, the prey must in turn explore innovative ways of evasion (Sewell, 2010). This pushes predators that have not adopted the speed and dexterity of their prey to find more cunning ways of hunting. Mimicry is therefore an ever-evolving process and it will be interesting to find out what known fish species will look like in a thousand years.
