Theodore Roosevelt National Park was established in 1947. The mountains are more than 55 million years old. The badlands of Theodore Roosevelt National Park are dry with occasional monsoon rains. The park is located in Medora, North Dakota, and is home to some amazing animals including wild horses, reptiles, and mammals. GEOLOGY The Little Missouri River eroding the mountain range is the reason the park is the way it appears today. The park is believed to be less than 60 million years old. Over 60 million years ago volcanoes across the West were erupting and spewing quantities of ash. The rivers near the volcanoes were gathering. The rivers began to dry up, leaving ash behind. The ash was dried in layers and transformed into sandstone, siltstone and mud while the layers of ash became bentonite clay.
