Topic > My interest in working in the child welfare system

I have always had an interest in working in a child welfare system. This semester during my Social Work 340 for my field internship I knew right away that I wanted to work in an elementary school setting. For my field placement I spend my day with a school social worker and in the school counselor's office. I enjoy interacting with students and creating positive relationships with them. The consultant's office effectively builds an empowering relationship with its clients by organizing specific meeting times. During these times the student is allowed to freely express himself and any concerns he may have. The consultant maintains frequent weekly and in some cases daily contact with his students' guardians. I really admire the way the agency has strong relationships with clients. Say no to plagiarism. Get an Original Essay During my field internship I also observed that client confidentiality is extremely important in the agency. Each client has a specific folder that includes vital documents that are stored in a locked, fireproof filing cabinet. The customer is aware that at any time of his visit he will be able to view his personal data. The file relating to each individual client is accessible only to the school counselor, Social Worker and the client's legal guardians. In some serious cases involving a custody or child protection case, it may be necessary to inform teachers and administrators if a particular client has certain accommodations that must be met, such as psychiatric medications or restrictions on a particular individual's interaction in the school environment to ensure students are protected from harm. I like how the privacy and safety of each individual student is an important priority. If a breach of confidentiality is suspected to have occurred, the defendant is placed on academic leave and with possible suspension or termination of employment, including revocation of state-issued licenses. The school board and the state of Minnesota are investigating the allegations to see if the case needs more attention. I realize that when I work in a public social service agency that commitment will be extremely important when working with clients. To work effectively with people in a social work context, a social worker must be warm, empathetic and genuine and offer unconditional positive regard to clients. Seeking assistance can be extremely nerve-wracking for some individuals and may even go against the cultural beliefs they have been socialized into. The way an agency's staff treats clients can impact the entire worker-client relationship. If someone feels disengaged or rejected, they may leave a social service agency and never seek valuable services again. This is why social workers must be continuously engaged and attentive to clients' needs and also aware of their various family dynamics. As a social worker I will also have to use perception to look at clients with a planned blank, which is an open attitude and an impartial view of the client's situation. During the initial consultation a social worker must also pay attention to their client by listening not only for verbal, but also non-verbal cues. Being constantly busy also involves being self-aware and willing to examine how many cultural elements can impact the working relationship between the client and the social worker. I am.
