This shows their poverty because most people would just like to go out and buy food, but instead they have to kill animals for food. Here you also talk about Leonie's boyfriend, Michael, who is in prison, however, after a story from dad to Jojo about a friend he met in prison, Ritchie, it kind of foreshadows Michael's release. Of course Leonie has to go and get him, so he packs his family and leaves behind his parents who would be returning soon. On the way to prison they make a quick stop at a friend's house, Jojo or Kayla don't know why. As Jojo explores the house he goes to the yard and sees all the meth, even the bag his mother tried to hide behind his back, this is the first time Jojo learns about his mother's problem. On the way back from prison they get stopped by the police and in a hurry his mother swallows all the meth because it's illegal, however, they still put her and handcuffs on her and this is the first time you hear the ghost of Ritchies telling Jojo that they will put you in chains because he is black. Despite this they release them and they can return home safely. Jojo soon learns that when he went to prison he actually released Ritchie's ghost because his ghost was stuck in theirs before. Ritchie then asks Jojo where Dad is to try to find out how he died. Pops tells him that when Ritchie and his friend Blue were escaping from prison, Blue raped a white woman and eventually the cops caught up, skinned Blue and cut off his arms and legs and, although Ritchie was not involved in the rape, he they would have taken anyway. and torture him so as to save him from that pop stabs him.
