Topic > "To Kill a Mockingbird" Summer Reading

The setting of this novel is a huge factor that controls the story and the overall outcome, the novel is set in a gloomy town, called Maycomb (fictional city), located in Alabama Also, this took place during the time of the "Great Depression", in the 1930s. The setting is strange, it seems non-existent to the rest of the world. It is a very lethargic and rainy city as suggested on page 5 it reads: " When it rains the streets turn to red mud". novel that plays an important role, Boo was internally hurt by his father at a young age and grew up to have a rather disturbing personality. Boo Radley is perceived by the citizens of Maycomb as a confident and reserved outsider, who never sets foot outside the house. One word I would describe Scout Finch is intelligent because in chapter 2 on page 19, she says she is literate, while no one else in her class was, “…, he discovered that I was literate and it seemed. towards me with a slight disgust." A time when my perception of a person changed as a result of my getting to know him better, he was once at school, he seemed very reserved and calm, he was present in most of my lessons, so we spent a lot of time together, after working together on projects I discovered that he was actually a very outgoing and courageous person, then we became great friends Walter Cunningham and Burris Ewell are similar because they both come from poor economic backgrounds, on page 22 it is stated "he didn't forget his lunch, he didn't have any", referring to Walter suggesting he couldn't afford lunch Walter Cunningham is much more active, even though he may be poor he still found a way to maintain his dignity and respect while Burris Ewell failed to do so and is lazy and doesn't work hard, he has built a bad name for himself in Maycomb stated on page 33, “…Ewells has been the disgrace of Maycomb for three generations. None of them did an honest day's work. The Radleys' backyard. First they crawled under the fence, helped Dill get up high enough to peer through the window, then a mysterious shadow appeared, they ran away quickly, in the midst of the chaos Jem loses his pants in the fence, and then BANG! They heard a shot. One time I did something bad was lie about taking out the trash, and I thought I'd get away with it because they wouldn't know, but my parents found out anyway. For me the most significant treasure found in the knot on the tree was the pocket watch which cannot work, as it relates to me because for my 13th birthday my parents gave me an expensive apple watch which I treasure , and I'm grateful to have it. The Mockingbird symbolizes purity, as Atticus says "it is a sin to kill a mockingbird", which I think refers to the characters Boo Radley and Tom Robinson because they have done nothing wrong. The lesson Jem and Scout learn from spending time with Mrs. Dubose is to not judge someone without knowing them. Atticus says that Mrs. Dubose is the bravest person he has ever known because she was battling her morphine overdose addiction, and Jem and Scout seem to be mad at themselves because they were arrogant to her but never knew about her condition until his death. The purpose of the church scene with Lula by Harper Lee is to open readers' eyes to the problems that blacks faced in getting educated and how much discrimination is affecting people. Beyond religion, the church acts as a helping hand to Tom Robinson's family as his wife struggles to care forchild. The main female influences Scout had before she had Aunt Alexandra come to visit was Calpurnia. The impact Calpurnia had on the scout was that she helped build the scout's character, kept her safe, and viewed her as being on the side of good and evil. An important adult figure in my life who influenced me to be the person I am today is my mom, she was always strict but I always listened to her because I knew it was for the best. The prison scene was an unexpected moment in the novel and kept the readers hooked. He put the lives of Jem and the Scouts in jeopardy because they followed Atticus and tried to look into his affairs, which he was meeting with mysterious men regarding the trial. Four cars had passed by the prison and parked there, a group of men came out and started talking to Atticus, Scout comes out of the hideout and runs towards Atticus, Jem and Dill also come out of the hideout. The men threatened the children and gave Atticus 15 seconds to make them leave. This situation was resolved through Scouts connection with Mr. Cunningham's son and he was part of the group of men who approached them, Scout spoke to Mr. Cunningham about the legal implications and his son, Mr. Cunningham had ashamed and asked his men to set him down and they left. This shows that Jem is interested in his father's situation and wants to help out and shows that Jem is becoming more mature in forming new relationships with other people. It is important that Atticus was appointed to Tom Robinson's case because this was it at the time. where discrimination was a major factor and Atticus is white trying to defend Tom, an African American man. This reveals that no matter what Atticus loves and tries his best to help everyone no matter the circumstances. I didn't want to do homework, but I did it anyway because my grades would get worse. The layout of the courthouse was described by Scout as whites sitting on the first floor and African Americans sitting in the balcony above. The importance of Jem and Scout's places was that sitting on the balcony with African Americans, in a time where discrimination was enforced, because they were white showed courage. The inconsistency in Mayella Ewell's testimony to Tom Robinson is that Atticus asked her if she remembers being hit in the face at first, she says no then yes, also another inconsistency is that when Atticus asked her if she was the first time Tom came to see him, she jumped and then responded by suggesting that she wasn't sure or that she was trying to tell a lie. The purpose of Dolphus Raymond's lie was to change people's perspective on him by acting like a drunken man so that most people would judge him for that and not for his real personality and lifestyle. I once twisted the truth to keep my friend safe from people teasing him near me, and he asked me what they said and I said nothing to worry about, I was just talking about some homework. The reaction of the black communities to the verdict was that they gave more respect to Atticus Finch, because he defended Tom Robinson. Bob Ewell's reaction to the verdict was quite simple: he became angry and vengeful towards Atticus and dedicated his life to stopping him. Jem's reaction was expected, he was clearly shocked by Tom's guilt, he hoped for Atticus' favor. My personal reaction was similar to Jem's. I was just shocked, because Tom proved his worth but no one believed him. Tom Robinson had tried to escape from prison, he escaped and tried to jump the.
