However, did you know that a civil war has been fought there for over 10 years and the country is still suffering from the consequences? In fact, from 1990 to 2002, over fifty thousand people were killed and countless others were maimed or injured. On top of this, Sierra Leone's economy was virtually paralyzed, as no traders dared to venture into the country, and traders who attempted to leave were not granted access. Furthermore, in the conquest of the tribes by the rebels, over twelve hundred schools were destroyed; schools that would otherwise have helped the nation rebuild society after the war ended. To add to the problems facing the nation during the Civil War, children were recruited by both sides to become soldiers. This was usually done by force, as the alternative was death. These child soldiers were fierce and loyal to their faction, used drugs daily, and conducted raids on cities where they killed soldiers and civilians of the opposing faction. These atrocities, however, can be overlooked when considering the age of these soldiers. With some as young as nine and others as young as sixteen, these children obviously didn't know any better. If they had not been taught to be cold-blooded killers, these children would never have become like this. It is sad to think that the youth of a nation have turned into such a cruel force, over which they have no say. The civil war in Sierra Leone officially ended today, but the country still needs terrible help and support. The country is still struggling to rebuild a new future from the ruble of its past. In many ways, it may seem easier for the townspeople to start fighting again. This, however, will obviously not lead to any long-term solution. The country needs to be rebuilt and you can help.
