People thought Tesla's birth was an ill omen from a midwife, Tesla's mother disagreed saying "he will be a child of light". (Gunderman) surprisingly was right. He was one of five children, his siblings were Angelina, Marica, Dane and Milka. Tesla's father wanted his son to join the priesthood like he did, but Tesla only had an interest in science. Tesla's mother was also brilliant: she created household items for use in the house, her creative thinking influenced her son. Tesla's brother Dane died when he was little, and it cost the 5-year-old Tesla dearly. Tesla later said that he had visions, this was a sign of his lifelong illness, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). Tesla memorized books, spoke many languages, and visualized plans and ideas. In his early school years he studied mainly German, mathematics and religion. Afterwards he concentrated exclusively on science, leaving his family so he could attend the Royal Gymnasium Superiore. Teachers thought he cheated because he could calculate and solve math problems mentally and thanks to his photographic memory. He could do calculations just using his mind, so he did very well in this school. While attending this school he was introduced to electricity and was fascinated by it, instead of four years he graduated in three. In 1874 he was drafted into the army, he didn't want to serve so he ran away to a mountain region and disguised himself as a hunter. Tesla later found a stack of letters from the Austrian Technical University stating that he was working a little too hard. Every morning he woke up at 3am and didn't go to bed before 11pm. He later started gambling, lost tuition money and was unprepared when final exams came around. He never took his exams and never graduated, he didn't want to tell his family that he hadn't graduated so he ran away to Maribor and became a designer. Tesla's father found out the truth about his upbringing, asked him to come home but Tesla said no. He was forced home because he was arrested for not having a residence permit.
