Pan's Labyrinth, released in 2006, is a dark fantasy film directed by Guillermo del Toro. Spirited Away is also a dark fantasy film released in 2001 and is directed by Hayao Miyazaki. In Pan's Labyrinth she is Ophelia, a curious girl who loves fairy tales and in Spirited Away she is Chihiro, an intelligent but shy girl. We meet both girls in the car, Ophelia travels with her pregnant mother to meet her new stepfather. Chihiro will go to her new home with her parents. As Ophelia goes, she finds an insect and believes it to be a fairy. At night that insect appears in her bedroom and turns into a fairy and asks her to come with him and he takes her to the underworld. There he meets a magical creature called the Faun. Chihiro later goes further where she meets a boy named Haku who warns her to leave the place before sunset. His parents turn into pigs after eating that food: “Food produced in the other world has the power to make you stay in that world.” Chihiro is so nervous and starts looking for her parents. In Pan's Labyrinth the faun gives magic stones to Ophelia and she puts those stones in the toad's mouth to get a key from his belly and the toad screams everything and she gets a key. The director uses an extreme close-up when the toad screams out the waste material. In Spirited Away Chihiro also places magic stones in the Faceless Man's mouth. The director uses an extreme close-up when the faceless man screams everything from his mouth. The similarity is therefore that both directors use magic stones as a support.
