The standard workday involves an influx of tasks that can become overwhelming. However, if those tasks are not urgent, we tend to put them off until they are, which is usually too late. On a normal day, I'm busy from the moment I wake up until around 10:30 pm, which leaves me no room to procrastinate. This taught me many lessons, both about myself and about bad tendencies. One lesson is that modern procrastination, in most cases, stems directly from our dependence on technology. Ergo, we should try to unplug from the realm of technology while trying to work. Unlike the article, I chose to do all of my work the night before it was due in middle school rather than splitting it up into multiple nights. Instead of taking the lead, I succumbed to the constant entreaties of social media and the electronic realm. The due date seemed so far away until the next day. I ran into a real dilemma when I felt overwhelmed by stress and stayed up late working on my homework, as I only had hours left. I didn't have enough confidence in myself to complete the project, and the quality of my work quickly began to deteriorate. I paid for the lack of sleep in other classes, and my lack of initiative was reflected in my poor grade. Only then did I realize how harmful procrastination is. The two weeks of music, television and movies were definitely not worth the condemnation of a failing grade staring back at me from the grade book. The culmination of my procrastination came to an abrupt end shortly thereafter. I was fortunate that there was an opportunity for extra credit after the assignment, but still it was.
