Iron Jawed Angels, a film that tells the story of a time in the 1900s when suffragettes were fighting for the passage of an amendment, which allowed any gender the right to vote. Throughout the film, I recognized many key terms taught in class such as oppression, racism, homophobia, and patriarchy. This movie is a true example of oppression. I say this because women have been treated unfairly by the government for some time now. When people watch this film they encounter many interesting characters such as Alice Paul, a college graduate and suffragist who became the leading woman in the protest against women's right to vote. Lucy Burns, another graduate who was Alice's right-hand woman in the protest for women's right to vote. Mable Vernon, a graduate and friend of Alice's who had come to help promote women's rights. Inez Milholland, a lawyer who became the lady on the white horse. Senator Leighton, one of many senators who did not support women's right to vote. Emily Leighton, is the wife of Senator Leighton. When Senator Leighton takes her children away, this is an example of patriarchy because the senator has all the power. According to the article "Declaration of Sentiments (1848)" it states: "He has taken away from her all property rights, even the wages she earns." The reason Emily's children were kidnapped is because she dedicated time and money to the movement. Say no to plagiarism. Get a tailor-made essay on "Why Violent Video Games Shouldn't Be Banned"? Anna Howard Slaw, former president of the National American Women Suffrage Association. Carrie Catts, later became president of the National American Women Suffrage Association and was very close to the president. Anna Howard Slaw, Carrie Catts, Lucy Burns and Alice Paul met and talked about the possibility of an amendment. In “Iron Jawed Angels” Carrie Catts says, “Dr. Shaw and I worked side by side with Susan and Elisabeth Stanton while you were still in diapers, Mrs. Paul.” Susan B. Anthony was another woman who supported women's suffrage. Alice Paul took over the committee in Washington. The first thing Alice did with the committee was organize a parade. The men's comments at the parade are an example of racism and homophobia because they called women derogatory terms. In Iron Jawed Angels, men say “Hey, you, he-she! Get off the streets and go home, you sluts.” After Alice and other suffragettes were expelled from the association, Alice founded the National Women's Party. The National Women's Party was called the Iron Jawed Angels by a senator who opposed the party. For me a significant part of the film was when the women from the Women's Party were arrested because they were protesting for women's rights outside the White House. Women protested during the war. Some of the movement's key figures were arrested that day. Later that week other women, including Alice Paul, were arrested for the same thing. Susan B. Anthony was arrested after allegedly attempting to vote. According to the article “Sentencing Speech in the Case of United States vs. Susan B. Anthony (1873)” Susan B. Anthony states: “I am degraded from the status of citizen to subject; and not only I individually, but my whole sex, are, according to the verdict of your honor, condemned to political submission under this so-called form of government.” Susan B. Anthony presented an excellent argument to the judge regarding her incarceration. Alice Paul and all her followers did not allow themselves to be..
