Topic > Community Service Program Reflection: Malama Loko Ea

Last September 15, 2018, I participated in a community service program with my friends at the Malama Loko Ea Fish Pond in North Shore, Hawaii. It was the first community service I did in that area. We chose this place because we simply want to go to the North Shore, especially me who have never been there. The only problem we had was the means of transport, but we discussed this later. We all listened to each other talk about their thoughts on this task and came to the point of intersection. Since I had never been to the North Shore, I was so excited and a little nervous at the same time. I got to go there alone and the whole journey along the route was amazing. I woke up early in the morning to catch the bus. It took two hours to get there, but those two hours were one of the greatest moments of my life. I got to see a whole new side of Hawaii, different from what I've seen so far. Say no to plagiarism. Get a tailor-made essay on "Why Violent Video Games Shouldn't Be Banned"? We all met in the area and went to the pond together. Before the start of the activity we made some small introductions and one of the area managers told a brief history of the pond. Loko e'a is a 400-year-old Hawaiian pond. I learned that the pond is self-sustaining and can maintain fish stocks if well managed. This reflects the artistry of Native Hawaiian resource management practices. The foundation's mission is to perpetuate Native Hawaiian culture through education, land management and community building, while sustainably restoring our precious natural resources. On the other hand, their vision is to connect the present to the past. The purpose of this foundation is to restore ea. Ea has many translations including independence, life, air or breath. It can also be a verb meaning “to stand up” or “to smell.” The pond serves as home to numerous aquatic species such as Ahole, Ama'ama and 'O'opu Naniha, all native to Hawaii. That's one reason the foundation has worked hard to restore and improve the pond. After the short talk we were divided into separate groups. We went to the part where there are a lot of weeds. They gave us gloves and tools and then we started working. I noticed that we all have the same style of work being performed. We just did what we were told and pulled out all the weeds. While we were doing the work, we had the chance to talk to Sayo Costantino, the director of Kupuohi's education program. He has served the foundation for over 10 years. He said removing invasive weed species is important to reopen waterways and allow native vegetation to thrive. It was then that I understood how important our task is in restoring balance in the local ecosystem. By eliminating these weeds, we are not only helping native plants grow, but also the marine species of Waialua Bay that rely on these natural food sources. To conclude, my experiences in this community service have made me realize how important our aina is. The little things we've done, like pulling weeds, have a significant effect on maintaining balance in the pond's ecosystem. Please note: this is just an example.
