Many people today spend amounts of money on their electricity bill without knowing that they are harming their wallet and the environment. It is bad for the environment because the fuel you receive in your electricity bill is called traditional, that is, made up of fossil fuels. These fossil fuels create pollution in the air that affects our ozone layer. A solution to this problem would be to abandon traditional fuel and enter the new world of alternative energy. My alternative energy is wind energy, generated by wind turbines or windmills. The windmill has been used for many years in history. Windmills, according to AE Wind Turbines, are used to generate electricity from the kinetic power of the wind. According to Trufts Now, depending on the speed of the windmill, this affects the electricity production from the windmill. The article states that if a windmill rotates slowly, it produces less energy, but if the wind speed doubles, the windmill will produce eight times more energy than under normal conditions. Windmills contain two main types of wind generators, the vertical axis and the horizontal axis. There are three main fossil fuels in the world: coal, natural gas and oil. These fossil fuels helped create one of the oldest traditional fuels called hydroelectric power. According to the USGS, in 2006 the United States had approximately 7% of its total energy produced by hydroelectric facilities. Hydroelectric energy is used to spin a turbine, which then turns a metal shaft into an electric generator, which produces energy. A hydroelectric power plant uses falling water to turn a turbine. The hydroelectric theory involves building a dam across a large river that has a large drop in elevation where it stores a lot of water behind its reservoir. The turbine shaft rises into the generator, which produces energy. Hydroelectric plants are more efficient at meeting peak energy demand during short periods, and one way to do this is to use “pumping,” which reuses the same water more than once. This traditional fuel may not use as much as fossil fuels, but it releases a lot of greenhouse gases. As with many things, the windmill has its advantages and disadvantages in energy production. If you own a windmill, the advantage would be that the wind is free, so you don't worry about the expense, and with modern technology it can be captured efficiently. But the disadvantage would be that the strength of the wind is not constant and your electricity would vary, meaning that windmills do not always produce the same amount of electricity.
