Topic > Is the Gion Japan Festival sustainable? - 1232

IntroductionFestivals are held in many areas of Japan. There are various types, from small to large ones, or they end in one day and last several days. Japanese festivals usually symbolize the cities or areas where the festivals are held or tell the traditions to future generations. In this article, we will first reveal what sustainability is and what sustainable events are. And then the Gion festival (祇園祭), one of the largest festivals in Japan, will be described and the resulting economic impacts will be shown. Finally the main topic of this article: "Is the Gion festival event sustainable?" will be discussed from different aspects. What is a sustainable event? An event should have at least one goal to hold. If it is seen as one of the ways in which tourism can make the area, city or country prosper, it should be sustainable. So, what is sustainability? What type of events can be considered sustainable? “Sustainable tourism is tourism that meets the needs of present generations without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs” (). And it also “does not exceed the environmental, social, cultural or economic carrying capacity of a given destination, and the related environmental, sociocultural and economic costs are minimized while the related environmental, sociocultural and economic benefits are maximized” (). So a sustainable event should ensure that the next generations are able to have the resources to survive and thrive (5) and bring benefits without destroying the environment, cultures and others. To meet the needs of current and future generations, the event management side should have high-level objectives (4). Even just holding an event can't attract people and if it's aimed at... middle of paper... I've got it. They are rivals and try to show better things than other sections. It leads to better quality. And finally it is held in Kyoto, the city loved by so many people. The festival corresponds to the vision of the city. And the participants put on makeup and perform. No other festival has these things. Next, it is obvious that the Gion Festival meets those definitions. Conclusion In this article, a sustainable event is defined as the event that meets people's needs, does not destroy the environment, society and culture, brings benefits, has high-level objectives and has clear differences from other events. Throughout this article we describe and discuss whether the Gion Festival is a sustainable event. Looking at the definitions, it is clear that it meets all 6 conditions to be a sustainable event. The Gion Festival is therefore a sustainable event.
