Topic > Richard III, the Duchess of York by William Shakespeare

We often say that there is no other love than a mother's, but the Duchess' character conflicts with this. In William Shakespeare's Richard III, the Duchess of York seemed vague in her answers. He also seems very patient with Richard III during the course of the play; however he never explores his hatred throughout the show. She is a widowed mother of Clarence, King Edward IV and Richard III. The Duchess of York has a bad relationship with her son because of the bad things he does, such as killing anyone who gets in the way of becoming king. Richard committed crimes and killed those closest to him and others just to reach the kingdom and be the king. Although many people may see the Duchess of York as an angry mother, the Duchess of York is a protective mother towards her children and grandchildren, resembles the mother figure very well, and is an important figure in the entire work. However her characterization shows her deep sadness and disappointment towards Richard at the end of the show. Of course any mother would be horrified and upset to see her son become a murderer. Throughout Richard III we see his emotions when Clarence dies, when Clarence's children go missing and knowing that the murder is his son Richard. Duchess York's goal is to be a good mother because she takes care of Clarence's children after his death. . He tries to protect them and hug both the children and Queen Elizabeth. In order for the Duchess to be a good mother to Richard III, she must remain patient, hide her grief towards him from the public eye, and avoid cursing him. According to the play we see the emotions that took place when the children, the Duchess of York and Elizabeth arrived to discuss the tragedy that happened to Clarence and… middle of paper… Richard III was, “O thou you will die, by God's righteous ordinance, before from this war you become a victor, or I will perish with pain and extreme age and never look upon your face again. Therefore bear with you my heaviest curse of battle, weary more than all the full armor you wear! My prayers for the opposing side's fight" (4.4.185). Overall, we can see that the biggest cost behind the death of the main character Richard is that his mother curses him to lose the fight in the Battle of Bosworth Field. Although it was difficult for the Duchess of York to treat her son, unfortunately she had to do so to stop the violence. This storyline acknowledges the Duchess of York's patience and the fact that she avoids getting angry and instead stays away forever. Work cited
