War Experiences World War I was a time of desperation, rivalry, and hatred between a number of countries due to not one, but many reasons. The experiences people went through during World War I were horrifying and they never wanted it to happen again. Unfortunately, the event of the Second World War broke out after the end of the first. Every soldier's nightmare was to fight this battle for the second time. There were many underlying causes of the war and after hearing and realizing how bad the time was through what people went through, it was a horrible time for everyone who lived through it, including Germany, Austria-Hungary, Empire Ottoman, Great Britain, France, Russia, Italy and Japan. A book, All Quiet on the Western Front, was written about a young German soldier and his experience and perspective on the war. Paul Baumer enlists in the German army at the outbreak of the Great War in 1914. His enthusiasm for belonging to an army fades and turns into a life in constant fear of being excluded to fight in a war. Along with Paul Baumer, there were millions of others who had combat experience in the First World War. Poems including In Flander Fields, Anthem for a Doomed Youth, Dulce et Decorum Est, The Happy Warrior, Before Action and Back were also written to incorporate the horror themes of war. The horrific war led to experiences so surreal and terrible that they went unmentioned by those who participated. In the aftermath of the Great War, a new perspective on war and modern society was created by analyzing the frightening encounters everyone had, including Paul Baumer in All Quiet on the Western Front identifying his war experience. All those who fought in the First World War had to live far from the nightmare of war. Paul felt betrayed by people because what he thought was war with patriotism and heroism was false, shattering his dreamed experience. From the beginning, Paul seemed to have matured and become more of a man unlike his childish actions by joining since school. His experiences along with millions of other people during this war caused a change in society and perspectives on what happened. This war made society less structured due to constant disputes between countries. In 1918 when the First World War ended everyone thought that everything was over and those who returned to militarism did so and the others did not. As the years passed, the rivalries did not end, causing the outbreak of the Second World War.
