Sustainability is the concept discussed by everyone around the world, including even non-designers. Due to globalization and advanced technological advancements, people are well informed about what is happening at the same time. Even though the concept of sustainability concerns every person who is part of this globe, as designers we have a social responsibility to be conscious of our design decisions and to find solutions that facilitate working towards the deteriorated conditions of the globe and also serve good for the future generations. This article explores the need to be exploratory in design for The author in “Three Principles” talks about how the design profession conveys the enormous amount of knowledge and history of classical designs in a short period of time and yet we denounce the knowledge of students are missing. Another reason is that the designer is relatively inefficient in taking up the challenge of sustainability because it seems that we are still in a nutshell and as designers we need to open ourselves up to be more innovative and efficient to incorporate sustainability. The author mentions the need for designers to explore the possibilities because in the advanced world we cannot solve any problem with the old solution. The author also talks about an interesting aspect of Fuller's concept of “ephemerization”. The concept that the more sophisticated a product is, the smaller it becomes. He supports his claim with an example of how technology has moved from a huge computer to a sleek tablet. There are many problems eating away at the earth on a daily basis and the damage we have caused to nature is growing beyond limits. A huge question arises: Is just a designer solely responsible for working on solutions for a green world? Shouldn't this be an overall combined effort by designers and non-designers? As a globe we contemplate the various solutions to the problems we are facing, but are we actually taking initiatives to be productive efficiently? It is certain that the solution for effective sustainable solutions is in the hands of every citizen of this world and considering sustainability only as a "design solution" but considering it a lifestyle.
