Through dance and movement, the plot was expanded with the assistance of choreographer Garth Fagan. A choreographer renowned for his innovative choreography primarily for the dance of Garth Fagan, Fagan used his unique choreographic style for The Lion King by combining a variety of ballet, jazz, modern dance, African dance and Balinese dance to suggest representations of nature without rendering them a replica itself and uses dance to help tell the story (Exploring the Lion King, 2010). Taymor's idea to expand the film by adding choreographic elements would not only define the overall concept, but would also guide the visual aesthetic by allowing dance as the main element that balances the musical numbers in all categories: effects, music and so on in the choreography . (Bluemental et al. 210:1999). Both Fagan and Taymor have made major contributions to diverse dance styles and performance techniques from around the world, creating the precision and versatility that are portrayed in the musical. To create the ideal staging of the lionesses on the hunt, the flying dancers in the aerial ballet to the taking of the hyenas in Pridelands, the collaboration between Fagan and Taymor suggested how these movements are performed with grace and balance using different dance styles and are cultural and constitute the vanguard of production (Taymor 148:1997). By analyzing three important dances from the musical, this chapter will analyze the presence of dance and movement represented in the musical and how these dances create drama, while still giving the impression of moving through an African savannah. Furthermore, this will give an idea of all the challenges and pitfalls that both Fagan and Taymor faced during the development of… half of the document… married this particular component to make a difference to those challenges from one dance to the next. This was possible thanks to Fagan's approach to choreography which is different than other choreography designed for other Disney films turned musicals, for example Beauty and the Beast and The Little Mermaid. These two major musicals have taken Broadway stages by storm. However, there is one ingredient missing from those shows that Taymor managed to capture from start to finish with The Lion King. The musical The Lion King gave critics an idea of how actors move on stage, embodying the human and animal aspects of all the characters from an animated element. It was a risky challenge that Fagan took on by radically moving from the negative to the positive using the vocabulary of dance and movement to balance the structure and pace of the hit musical..
