According to Finkelhor et al (2005), increasing rates of child victimization in recent decades have created a global focus on child abuse. With these rates increasing, most countries around the world have started to face this situation. Most countries have enacted laws that classify cases of child victimization as punishable crimes according to the provisions of the law (Finkelhor et al, 2005). As noted by Giardino (2010), the growing prevalence and consequences of child abuse require detailed research and investigation around the world. This research paper explores the controversial topic of child victims. The article describes the main types of child abuse, the extent of the problem, the intergenerational transmission of violence, theories of child abuse, and particular types of child abuse. Types of Child Abuse Child abuse described by Giardino (2010) refers to the aspect of causing or allowing to occur any offensive contact that can be defined as harmful to a child's organism. Furthermore, Giardino (2010) defines it as the use of offensive communication that may harm, shame or offend the child. From a psychological perspective, child abuse can be defined as an act that omits various procedures in the child's development (Giardino, 2010). The Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act adopted in the United States describes child abuse as “at a minimum, any recent act or failure to act by a parent or guardian, resulting in death, serious physical harm or emotional, sexual abuse or exploitation, or an act or failure to act that presents an imminent risk of serious harm” (Giardino, 2010). Physical Child AbusePhysical child abuse is the most common...... middle of paper......vent every case of child abuse, but we can be vigilant and informed about child abuse and learn the signs of it. As a society, people need to be aware that child abuse occurs across all economic boundaries. Children as we know are very active and get injured while playing. These injuries are explainable versus injuries that cannot be explained by the parent. The main goal is that teachers, doctors, etc. should be able to distinguish between normal injuries and non-accidental injuries. Identifying early signs of child abuse can save a child's life. Every case of child abuse should be thoroughly investigated by a professional who can determine whether the child is being abused or not. Child abuse is a traumatic experience for the child and can have lasting effects. This is why it is very important that your child has immediate access to counseling and other forms of therapy.
