A promise is defined as "a statement that something will or will not be done, given, etc. by one." (Collins English Dictionary, 2014) Before reading From Failure to Promise: An Uncommon Path to Professoriate written by Dr. C. Moorer I had never considered what my “promise” would be. I found myself experiencing a roller coaster ride of emotions as I read Dr. Moorer's story. I devoured the book in two days and found myself faced with a clearer perspective of what my promise is and how it could impact the lives of global citizens. I intend to obtain a Master's degree in Clinical Art Therapy. From now on I promise to use my knowledge and skills to help all those in need, especially children, through the practical application and distribution of education, on the symptoms of trauma in children and therapeutic intervention , in all areas of the globe. As I read From Failure to Promise I have faith that “the greatest triumphs of my life [may be] the result of [my] ability to travel through the bitterness of the wilderness to reach the sweetness of the sun.” (2010) story on such a deep level. Like him, at one point I found myself “pursuing external validation” in a poorly chosen graphic design career. I struggled to earn my degree with many similar ups and downs, such as going to community college (after dropping out of a state school) and then continuing on to another SUNY school. Right before I graduated I found myself “revisiting some of [my] hopes” and they not only “seem unattainable” but also quite undesirable. (Moorer, 2010) After graduation, I struggled to stay in a field that I felt was superficial and meaningless.
