Our constant search for new information or knowledge is astounding. As we mature, we are faced with different circumstances that shape how we approach our desire for literacy. Whether it is learning a new language, acquiring new skills, or embracing ideologies, it is undoubtedly a greater responsibility once acquired. Our newfound expertise can lead to deplorable lifestyles or a better career. In the mid-1980s, Manila was peppered with mass actions calling for the removal of the incumbent president. There were a dozen ideologies inciting young people to unite and raise arms against the government. They capture fragile young minds at the height of vulnerability. The exciting enlightening doctrines penetrate into their inner being sensitizing the country and its countrymen. Ideas and theories of the mind that are perfect in the text and have no chance of coming to fruition. Yet, these young minds pursue the perpetual struggle for change. I still have relatives and friends who are sacrificing not only their lives but also the lives of their children, just to see the day when their ideologies will come to life. Meanwhile, the entire world and countless opportunities are often overlooked. These same ideologies spread like wildfire in the countryside. Opening the eyes and minds of the once illiterate farmers, exposing that they are subjected to atrocities by the landowners. Landowners are often well connected and employ their private armies to reduce any threat to their interests. Hundreds if not thousands of lives have been lost as “rescue” death squads eliminate farmers who begin to show signs of success. Farmers struggle to improve the quality of their lives by becoming educated and skilled... using paper... and supplies instead of toys. These gifts were in turn sent to the nursery so these children could share my son's vision of literacy. Sharing literacy with kids his age means sharing responsibility. We continue to promote these simple books and supplies to support children in daycare. Seeing these children beaming with pride, their eyes wide open, their smiles and their enthusiasm exuding is an absolute indulgence. Whether it is an inner-city boy, or a child of poor urban families in the Philippines, or a worker or woman seeking a new career path, seeking a higher form of literacy means taking responsibility for how new knowledge is used. Literacy is sometimes taken out of context and used in a self-destructive way, yet more often than not it facilitates our hopes and aspirations for a better quality of life..
