Topic > Technology Controls Us - 850

Nowadays people are surrounded by technology. We can't live without it. And we rely on it a lot every day. We would feel painful if there were no digital devices. In the past, we were mainly influenced by the people in our community. Through technology, we are now easily influenced by people all over the world. Technology brings us convenience and helps us work faster. Without a doubt, technology offers us many advantages. However, technology also causes people to have a negative impact. We live in a parallel world. When you gain something, you will lose something. As we continuously focus on our digital devices, we will not be aware of what we are missing. Technology takes away our precious things: our freedom, the time we spend with family and friends, our true selves, and communication skills. Because of technology, we can't seem to control ourselves. Technology is too attractive for us. People are unconsciously losing self-management and are empowered by technology. Surveillance cameras automatically make people behave well in public. The purpose of installing surveillance cameras is to observe people's behaviors and leave evidence when illegal action occurs. There are many “eyes” around us on the street. Citizens are constantly monitored. Since people cannot escape surveillance cameras, we should be aware of what we are doing and automatically behave well. In other words, people are forced to behave in front of the cameras so as not to become suspicious of the police or other people. In the book “1984”, Orwell states that “not letting one's feelings show on one's face was a habit that acquired the status of instinct, and in... middle of paper... information influences people greatly. People easily lose their thoughts due to online information. People are gradually losing true interpersonal communication due to technology, which provides people with a comfortable place to talk. Technology diminishes our ability to communicate with people face to face. We have less opportunity to speak with emotions and gestures. Typed words cannot express all our feelings. However, technology gives us the confidence to share our things with the people we want. According to Maura Keller in the article “Social Media and Interpersonal Communication,” she argues that “people prefer mediated communication; people tend to text instead of talking face to face. Furthermore, according to the A Time Inc. study, “more than half of digital users prefer to use digital devices to communicate.”
