Throughout history, millions of children have been victims of physical abuse; the effects of this abuse have been shown to profoundly affect mental and physical health throughout a lifetime. Although child abuse has quickly become a more discussed issue, it is nothing new in today's society. Dating back to ancient times, physical child abuse has always been attributed to the lives of people around the world. Approaches and understandings of child maltreatment have changed as societies have modernized and advanced; while one thing remains an unsolvable issue, child abuse happens constantly and continuously all over the world. Looking back into ancient times, child abuse was a very important and underrated part of life. In ancient tribes, newborns were frequently killed simply to reduce the number of mouths to feed due to the limited availability of food. The people of ancient societies such as Egypt, Greece, and Rome beat or sacrificed their children to the gods in the hope that good fortune would be brought upon them, or to keep the gods normally happy (Dolan 37). As the centuries passed, child abuse became increasingly evident in everyday and family life.
