Topic > Standardized testing, bullying, and lack of parenting…

This semester of Education 101 I have learned a lot about the different problems that occur in the school setting. All issues are important, but some are more important than others. One is the standardized test which I can say is an unfair test because everyone learns differently and understands things differently, this test caters to a learning style. Bullying is another problem that is difficult to address and maintain, but it is very serious and occurs every day. Lack of family involvement matters the most because if a parent doesn't show interest in their child's education, the child won't show interest either. Controversial issues occurring in school environments that I consider important are standardized testing, bullying, and lack of family involvement. Standardized tests target a population of people and a learning style. These tests are supposed to measure whether you are at your grade level, but they can be extremely ineffective. I remember taking the SAT and them asking me questions that I didn't know how to answer and it was so long that I didn't want to take it. This creates a problem for students because they understand why take a test that I know I will fail and that will take hours to take. The success rate is very low. These tests are aimed at people tolerant enough to sit for an hour and understand the work in a particular way, but not everyone is tolerant enough for this. Just like one of my old professors said that everyone learns, understands, and has tolerance for many things, but taking a four-hour test with work that you can't understand because you don't have enough time to think in that particular section is not right for all students...... middle of paper ...... ng is not a problem in school and try to make sure they understand it so it doesn't happen outside of school. Due to lack of parental involvement as a teacher I would make sure that I can involve all parents in the student's school life because whether they like it or not, the involvement of their parents or guardians is the most important thing. If I can't make that happen, I will try to assure my students that they can come to me for help and if they need help with anything they can talk to me. I would like to show my students that I care, but it works best if both teachers and parents work as a team. Yes, there are many issues at hand when it comes to educating students and ensuring they get the best education possible, but as a team of teachers and parents we must come together and do what is right to protect education and make sure we are teaching and they are learning.
