Topic > Pros and Cons of Bilingual Education - 724

Language is a part of culture and is how we communicate with each other; this is a sacred thing that should be respected in all cultures. Banning bilingual education is inherently racist. People who favor Proposition 227 can give many compelling reasons to think this bill is a good idea, but it is not. When you dig deeper into the facts, there is literally no reason why bilingual education is a bad thing. People are afraid of change and fear that as Spanish becomes more widespread, English will somehow fade away. This bill should be repealed because change is a good thing, bilingualism will connect us, and using more than one language helps society in many ways. As more and more Hispanic people move to the United States, a change will occur. This is not a bad thing This country is very different than it was 200 years ago and most people agree that this is a good thing. Moving forward, much of our population speaks Spanish (and many other languages) and instead of fighting it, we should embrace it. I'm not saying we should stop speaking English. People should learn Spanish and English. The Spanish-speaking population is more than willing to learn English. This is not an “oo” situation and we need to stop treating it as such. Knowing more than one language is good for your brain health, makes you more educated, and gives you more opportunities to communicate with people. When linguists study language, they have found that only good comes from being bilingual. It helps break down cultural prejudices and opens people's minds. By not allowing children to learn these languages together, the government is depriving them of a tremendous opportunity to make them better citizens of the world. The bilingualism of an area is also good for the economy. Having another language adds a whole new group of people who can start businesses and spend money. Create something completely new
