The passage of chapter 9 of the novel “Lord of the Flies” by William Golding has the theme of the journey of death which is represented through images and use of vivid diction. The passage shows the events that happen after Simon's death and how the effect and tone are reproduced. The tone of serenity is depicted in the passage that shows how, after Simon's death, the mood and tone bring a state of calm, peace, and serenity to the air. Simon's death is one of the greatest misfortunes in William Golding's “Lord of the Flies,” both because of who he is and how he dies. Simon is the most sensitive character and represents the best part of human nature. He is the only boy who recognizes the true beast of the island that they are. When he releases the parachutist, the beast from the air, he demonstrates a consideration that is not given to him. In these final paragraphs, it appears that Golding is mourning the loss of civilized behavior. Golding uses nature imagery to portray how Simon was connected to the natural world. After Simon's death, a sense of serenity takes over the beach and even the sea seems to become less rough as "the rain stopped and the clouds moved away" (p.153). Although Simon's death was sad, shocking and unfortunate, Golding tells us about those "fiery-eyed creatures" (p.154) that surround Simone's body and transform it into a beautiful figure of "carved marble" (p. 154 “Everything was covered in a layer of silver” (p.154), which softens the enormity of Simon's death. Golding uses bright colors and descriptions such as "phosphorescence" (p.153) which implies that although Simon is dead, he is figuratively "brought back to life" by the nature that surrounds him the images created by the s......center of the card......colors, help create a feeling of eternity in the passage This is shown in the quote “the water rose further and clothed Simon's rough hair with brightness” (p.154). These lights surrounding Simon symbolize his ascension to heaven. Simon's connection with nature is clear throughout this passage it provides him with a natural halo and as Simon's body floats away, so does the best part of human nature symbolically. The passage shows the events that happen after Simon's death and how the effect and tone are reproduced. The tone of serenity is depicted throughout the passage which shows that Simon's journey of death brings about a state of calm, peace and serenity in the air. William Golding's novel has many wonderfully detailed passages describing the séance in detail, but these four paragraphs trace the true journey of Simon's death.
