Along the same lines, body image studies have been conducted around the world, across multiple age groups. Many studies revealed that body image had become a matter of concern for an individual when he or she was younger. While growing up, many children go through a period of socialization. Given that there are multiple forms of socialization, but one form influences the way both females and males may look at their body image. The University of Nevada, completed research that states, “The use of dolls in play can influence the development of body image and may lead a child to compare their body to that of a doll” (Pedersen and Markee) . A common doll, known as Barbie, has been named one of the most popular dolls in many countries. Barbie not only has a disfigured body, but she also has glamorous clothes to go with her (Pedersen and Markee). What does this teach children in today's society? Is this doll disappointing a lot of kids when they don't have the body image she has or the clothes she wears? (Pedersen and Markee). One study conducted states: “Particularly famous aspects of Barbie are her body image and proportions which have been criticized as extremely unrealistic” (Anschutz and Engels). According to Kurther and McDonald, when children play, their toys become a very influential element in the development of their self-concept. Beyond that, children have a favorite toy that they become attached to. Your child's choice of favorite toy can impact how they identify. The toy they choose can have an impact on many areas of their life. Toys can send a particular message to a child about their gender, adult roles, and even values. When they pick up a toy, many think... middle of paper... dissatisfaction is taken to a whole new level and should be a cause for concern. More studies should be done to help spread the word that what is beautiful depends on the individual. Today's society is very critical, in a way that affects the way people look at themselves. This may cause them to try to “fit in”. Today more than ever, individuals want to “fit in”. This is why problems start to arise more and more often and people get stressed and depressed about what someone might think of them if they were anything shy of ideal. Beauty is a work of art and people need to take a step back and ask themselves if they want to look like the rest of the world, or do they want to be unique, like every work of art. Each work of art is unique in its own way and is thought of in different ways by many different people. So, once again, I ask you what is good for you?
