As mentioned earlier in my planning phase, I had chosen to help "David" participate in a team basketball game for the completion of my social work graded unit project HNC. In studying David's support plan; I had identified that his social skills needed slight improvement, while his self-motivation needed more encouragement. I believe that the group sporting activity that we planned and carried out achieved these objectives. Furthermore, my internship supervisor forwarded the confirmation of the successful completion of this activity via email to my senior lecturer. Before carrying out the activity, I had already agreed with David and my supervisor that I should personally support David during the basketball game. Therefore, I arrived at my seat 30 minutes before the start of my shift to assess the suitability of the gym and the condition of the basketball equipment. Studying the 'Protection of Individuals from Harm and Abuse' has allowed me to identify and reduce the factors that contribute to the occurrence of physical harm, enabling me to meet the Scottish Government's National Care Standard 4.2 [TSG], which states; “You have a nominated member of staff who is responsible for your care and support.” After going through my checks, I met David as he was being dropped off at the centre's doors. Before David got out of the taxi, I asked him to open his cane so I could examine its stability; which was sturdy and reliable. I then helped him out of the car and offered him a choice of mobility assistance. I might guide it with my arms or adopt a technique I use with other blind service users which involves me clapping and them walking with their cane towards the noise.
