According to Vital Statistics, in 2009 there were 554 adults who unintentionally shot and killed themselves. At the same time, 112 minors accidentally did the same thing (Congressional Digest 4). And “according to the BJS, NVCS data from 1987 to 1992 indicated that in each of those years, approximately 62,000 victims of violent crimes (1 percent of all victims of such crimes) used guns to defend themselves. Another 20,000 people used guns to defend their property each year” (Congressional Digest 5). They say that an educated society is an overall better society. If so, I believe that an educated society is a safer society. If everyone in society, including children, received an education on how to properly handle a firearm, I believe the number of accidents and the number of crimes committed would decrease. I believe that everyone has the right to safety and that everyone should have the opportunity to learn how to defend themselves if a dangerous situation arises. In my opinion, in the long term there would be even more guns and we would live in a safer society. First off, Ryan Somma writes, “I recently read the news about a four-year-old boy in our neighborhood who accidentally killed himself.” after finding his father's gun placed in the bedside drawer" (Summa 6). We've all heard stories of this happening before and it's nothing short of devastating. I believe there are things we could do to reduce the number of gun-related incidents in America, and some of these changes could be dramatic. I think if schools offered gun safety classes to all ages, potential mass murderers would have to think about what they are doing and that maybe coming into school would be dangerous for them. I'm not talking... middle of paper... I own firearms. More guns equals fewer gun crimes. I don't think it's entirely out of the question. For me the statistics say it all. More guns may seem scary, but that's actually a good thing. I believe that the number of accidents and the number of crimes committed would decrease if children had the opportunity to learn the basics of firearm safety in school. I also believe that everyone has the right to safety and everyone should have the opportunity to learn how to defend themselves if at any time a dangerous situation arises and that person would be prepared to respond. In the long term this could lead to even more firearms and we would live in a safer society where criminals would have to think twice before entering some building where they might be shot. I think if we teach children about safety, it could affect their lives one day.
