Topic > Torture goes against national human rights laws

Torture has long been a security system for many countries. Torture is “any act by which severe pain or suffering, whether physical or mental, is intentionally inflicted on a person for the purpose of obtaining information or a confession from him or a third party, punishing him for an act which he or a third party has committed or is suspected of having committed” (Bassiouni 418). Torture is a very complicated topic, because there are many ways of torture such as waterboarding, beatings, slapping on the head and electroshock. Furthermore, there are many reasons for governments to torture some people which have made this topic controversial. Although many governments believe that torture is a good way to keep the nation safe, the American government should not use torture because it is inhumane, provides no useful information, and is against the nation's human rights laws. There are many ways of torture and one of them is waterboarding. Waterboarding is a method of torture that involves pouring water on the victim's face. This causes the victim to feel as if they are drowning. There are several methods used in waterboarding. One of them puts a blanket over the victim's face and pours water over his mouth and nose. Waterboarding has many side effects on the person being tortured. The person will suffer extreme pain, brain damage, broken bones or death: “Waterboarding could cause hypoxia, a condition in which the body does not receive enough oxygen, either because the victim holds their breath or inhales water – and an inadequate supply of oxygen can lead to fatal organ failure” (Ballantyne). Therefore, people who have been tortured by waterboarding may suffer for a few moments or years after the torture a...... middle of paper.... ..tampering with the country's security, but if this is the case they would have kept Syria and Egypt safe. Every human life is unique and should be rewarded with respect to obtain information, it takes away that person's freedom. They have become under the domination of others, but used for the advancement of others. Every human being has the right to live free and torture is against torture because that would not make the United States a safer place. Furthermore, it is inhumane because they use cruel methods in torture. This makes the person suffer for life or causes his death. In most cases terrorists lie or provide useless information in order to survive. Finally, torture is against the nation's human rights laws and the United States should follow them.
