Question n. 1: Compare and contrast the psychoanalytic theories of Freud and EricksonFreud's Theory: Freud believed that most human behavior is motivated by the unconscious mind. “Freud proposed that personality has 3 structures: the id, the ego and the superego” (Santrock, 23). The id is the origin of the instinct-driven personality. The id resides in the unconscious rather than in reality. The ego, another structure of reality, appears as children learn the needs and constraints of reality. “The ego is called the “executive branch” of reality because it uses reasoning to make decisions”( Santrock, 23).The Id and the Ego do not make moral judgments or consider what is right or wrong. "The Superego is the moral branch of the personality" (Santrock, 23). it is a question of “conscience”.” Freud believed that we all go through 5 stages of psychosexual development: oral, anal, phallic, latency, and genital” (Santrock, 24). Freud argued that adult personality is determined by how we resolve conflicts between the sources of pleasure in each phase and the needs of reality. Erickson's psychosocial theory: includes 8 phases of human development. “Each phase consists of a unique developmental task that presents individuals with a crisis that must be resolved” (Santrock, 24). against mistrust is the first phase that appears in the first year of life. The warmth that arises from a family makes children learn to trust and feel that the world is beautiful to live in. Autonomy against shame and doubt (1-3 years of age) is the stage where children will try to do something on their own and explore the world around them learned by completing this task. By completing this assignment, I learned about human development in many areas from many different theories. I realized whether a child will become an adult with good qualities, or an adult without qualities, depends on many factors. Therefore, raising or teaching children is not just about giving them basic things, such as feeding, sleeping or potty training, but early childhood caregivers and educators need to know the environment around them that influences their behavior and development . Furthermore, I think that health workers, teachers and early childhood educators should apply all theories of child development to their work. They should not rely on one theory to understand a child, because there could be many factors behind a child's behavior..
