Reading and Writing. Painting and drawing. Dancing and singing. Just a few of the many forms of entertainment that shape American culture. Many people look for various outlets in their free time, both active and passive; and whether it's sports, TV, music, etc., many agree that entertainment is a vital aspect of today's society. While its influence is undeniable, some people (like those Neal Gabler writes about in his book Life the Movie: How Entertainment Conquered Reality) might argue that this is bad for our society, as it only leads to corruption. While the story may support Gabler's idea that entertainment has the potential to negatively influence our morals and social order, it has also been beneficial to our society and can be used in constructive ways. Whether entertainment is good or bad depends on the person and how they choose to use their surroundings. When people think of entertainment, the influence of the media often comes to mind. Both reality stars and celebrities have been thrust into the limelight by serving as role models not only for young people, but for society as a whole. This is an example of the negative influences entertainment can have as it causes people to hold unrealistic standards and expectations for themselves and others. Some may think that the entertainment industry glamorizes immoral behavior, making it seem fun and harmless. The focus on fit and appearance in the entertainment world has had a major impact on the way our society is today, promoting the need to be a certain way, both in body and behavior. Indeed, people who are considered more attractive, or who fit the molds we are commonly shown, have an easier time finding work and have access to a larger market. entertainment in a key part of American culture that allows for the diversity that makes our society unique and functional. If we were to rid the world of these influences, who's to say that it would have a positive effect or be better for our country than what we are exposed to now? One must realize that entertainment has existed since the dawn of man. Whether it's gladiators fighting in arenas that draw large crowds, or sitting in front of the TV as is commonly done today, it is an important part of our society. Ignoring any benefits it might have would be a waste of potential to expand and be open to other ideas. If there were no demand for the influences represented to us, they would not exist. What keeps the entertainment business going is its success, because society sees it not just as a form of inevitable doom, but as a form of imminent growth..
