Global Dominance of English Language In the year 2014, the most spoken language in the world is English. There are currently 1.5 billion people who speak English as a first language, second language or foreign language. The English language has had a great impact on the world as a whole. English is still the dominant language spoken throughout the world. Although the language has evolved over time and changed in many ways, it has still remained and become a widespread language throughout the world. This article will delve in detail into how English established itself as the dominant language and the history of the language's spread. I will also explain why increased language is a positive and negative development. The history of the English language first arrived in England in the 5th century from Northern Europe. The language initially spread to the British Isles. It became a stronghold for the Celtic language. The English language began to increase after the Norman invasion of 1066, when William the Conqueror took over. It will take more than 300 years for the English language to become a global language. David Crystal states in his book that “A language becomes an international language for one main reason: the political power of its people, especially its military power” (Crystal 7). Even if it takes 300 years, the language will travel quickly and spread to different continents. Many contributed to the spread of the English language. The English are where the English language originated and where it was first spoken. This is why the English are key factors in the history of the English language. The language spread mainly due to invasions and occupations......middle of paper......inant and is used by billions of people around the world. The reason this would be a negative development is because “When it turns out that even the largest English-speaking nation, the United States, has only about 20% of the world's English speakers, it is clear that no one can claim ownership exclusive” (Crystal 130). In more recent years, studies have shown that English has existed for 3,000 years. It had preceded Latin as the dominant language. I believe English will be the dominant language for a long time. I believe this because English has not only become a global language, but a language that has helped the world. English has made communication with different nations easier and this opens up trade and much more between countries. English has left its mark in history and has shown why it is here to stay and be the dominant language.
