Topic > Triangle: The Fire that Changed America - 1617

“The 'Triangle' Company, “With blood this name will be written in the history of the American labor movement, and with feeling this history will remember the names of the strikers of this crusader workshop” (Von Drehle 86). Even before it happened, the Forward predicted the terrible Triangle Shirtwaist Factory disaster that occurred a year, a month, and seventeen days later (86). Triangle: The Fire that Changed America, by David Von Drehle tells the story of the horrific fire. David Von Drehle is a journalist for the Washington Post. Von Drehle put a tremendous amount of work into writing Triangle. All his work paid off as Von Drehle received numerous awards for Triangle. Some of the awards include 2004 Christopher Award Winner, Amazon Top 50 Book of the Year, New York Society Library Book of the Year, New York Public Library Book of the Year, and Washington Post Book World Rave of the Year (inside cover). Some of his previous works include Among the Lowest of the Dead: Inside Death Row and Deadlock: The Inside Story of America's Closest Election (Back Cover). Von Drehle was qualified to write this book due to his profession, experience and interest in the event. His profession is that of a journalist and as a journalist he tried to report the story of the fire. As for the experience, Von Drehle used a lot of resources and even had the chance to visit the eighth, ninth and tenth floors and the roof of the place where the fire occurred, which is now the Brown New York University Building (Acknowledgments). Von Drehle also spent time doing research at the Library of Congress (Acknowledgments). One of the primary sources he used was the transcribed testimony from the People of the State of New York trial of Isaac Harris and Max Blanck. He received help... middle of paper... on Wednesday, as for counterfeiting and Blanck's arrest. “The fire was a slow death for the company” (266). Triangle is a surprisingly written book about the true events that occurred on March 25, 1911. This book would be of great value to historians because it provides a fully detailed account of the events preceding and following the Triangle fire. It has a more permanent interest because of the time it took place, almost a hundred years ago. Some people like Charles Murphy, Charles Whitman, and Max Steuer were thought to always be remembered, but today they are almost forgotten, known only to historians, and not always well known to them (267). Overall, the Triangle Fire was truly the fire that changed America because it brought political change to Tammy Hall, change for workers, and a push for a better future for workers..
