The meaning behind Octavio's The Street is about how Octavio isn't sure what exactly he wants out of life, after Octavio resigned from his post as ambassador to Mexico he wasn't sure if he made the right choice or what he would do Now . Although at the end of the poem he is trying to come to terms with his decision, so in the end he compares himself to "no one". The Road, by Octavio Paz, uses metaphor and extended imagery to convey the struggle within. In his poem, "The Street," Octavio Paz uses the literary invention of extended metaphor, imagery, and a mysterious, almost foreshadowing tone to capture the reader's attention. Octavio's past uses dark, mysterious tones and moods to capture the illusion of confusion. To begin with “The Street” has dark tones and a mysterious atmosphere, an example are the first and second verses “Here is a long and silent road. I walk in the darkness and I stumble and fall.” Secondly, in 1962, Paz became Mexico's ambassador to India and resigned six years later. This event led him to feel confused and alone, thus creating the confusion and eerie tone of “The Street.” Finally Octavio Paz uses words in “The Street” like “Silent Street, all dark and without doors, dry leaves and no one”.
