From ancient times everyone was grateful to his father that he took away his taxes. After the city took over, new people started asking Emily to pay their taxes again. Miss Emily could only say, “I have no taxes in Jefferson. Colonel Sartoris explained it to me. Perhaps one of you can access the city records and be satisfied” (Faulkner 221). Taxes weren't the only thing the town had trouble with when it came to Miss Emily. People started complaining about a terrible smell coming from their yard. They wanted to tell her to clean up within a certain period of time, but they took it upon themselves to do something themselves. “'It's pretty simple,' he said. «Send word to her to clean up. Give her a certain amount of time to do it, and if she doesn't do it...'” (Faulkner 222). The city as a whole did not help Emily in any way after her father's death.
