During the 1990s, a new organization arose to fight the destruction of the natural environment, called the Earth Liberation Front (ELF). Then, in March of 2001, the Federal Investigation Bureau (FBI) deemed the ELF the number one domestic terrorist threat to our nation. They began to bring about their own destruction, mainly through arson and explosions, of institutions, factories, farms, etc. who considered the natural terrestrial environment or any living specimens to be exploited. These attacks cost millions of dollars in damages to their victims, but never harmed or put anyone's life at risk. In January 2011, Marshall Curry and Sam Cullen published If A Tree Falls: A Story of the Earth Liberation Front, an internal aspect book of the ELF organization, as they followed several activists to discover how the group functioned internally and recall their involvement in many well-known attacks. The film centers on the life of Daniel McGowan, who was once heavily involved within the organization for several years, which included arson attacks. Years after his separation from the group, McGowan is under house arrest awaiting his final trial. He, like many, now regrets many of his actions, but recognizes that he must still take responsibility for what he did. Daniel McGowan appears to be a very kind environmentalist, not the extreme radical activist who would protest with arson. McGowan was born in 1974, his father was a New York police officer, he graduated with a degree in economics and then went to work for a public relations office. After some time passed and he realized the environmental destruction that was taking place, he soon moved to Eugene, Oregon, to separate...... middle of paper......tte National Forest, burning a Forest Service Truck. Craig Rosebraugh, former spokesman for the Land Liberation Front, encourages individuals to attempt to overthrow the American government, stating that "the revolution in the United States must encompass a variety of strategies" and that it "cannot succeed without the implementation of violence” (LIDDICK). Environmental radicals call what they do “direct action”, while the government has called their behavior “ecoterrorism”. As mentioned above, the group is based on three main guidelines: Inflicting economic damage on those who profit from the destruction and exploitation of the natural environment. To reveal and educate the public about atrocities committed against the earth and all species that inhabit it. Take necessary precautions against harm to any animal, human or non-human
