Topic > The Giver by Lois Lowry - 1545

The Giver is set in a futuristic society where the government controls everything. The elders are the head of the society. Their company doesn't have a name but they call other nearby companies elsewhere. The society is on some planet which is probably Earth. The elders assign each person a job when he or she turns twelve. There are no birthdays and everyone moves on to the next age on the same day every year. This community is actually bad because it doesn't let its people have memories. People cannot see colors and their atmosphere is controlling and monotonous. . A birth mother gives birth to children, and elders assign children to a family. The concept of this society is very unique because people are not allowed to have memories. Some memories include love, snow, war and music. People don't even know what these things mean. They live in a desolate and empty world. Jonas begins to understand why society is cruel to people later in the book. The elders did this because they did not want the people to rebel against the government. Taking away their memories would cause them to never think about it. Furthermore, the company is only allowed to have a certain number of people. People and children who misbehave or have mistakes are released. Release means they are killed via an injection. There are 2 main characters in the book, Jonas and the Giver. Jonas is the protagonist of the book. He is a boy who lives in a controlling society. He lives with his father, mother and sister Lily. Jonas is intelligent and is very involved in his community. He does well at school and respects the rules. He is a little different from his friends because he can see the color red. The people in the community cannot......middle of paper......shows perfectly how important his memories are in everyday life. Memories allow people to think further and make you smart. Jonas had a lot of wisdom. Jonas is characterized as wise and intelligent because he can see colors. The setting shows how the community is very isolated and boring. Elsewhere, however, it is lively and active. The Giver is a great book because it entertains the reader. The Giver is also an easy level read. It shows how important memories are. Jonas, the protagonist, captures memories and learns a new meaning of life. I would give this book a 9/10 because the use of language is good and the plot is easy to understand. Lois Lowry does a great job of explaining the setting and characters. It's interesting to know what goes through Jonas' mind. Overall, this book is fantastic and the author's language is fabulous
