Kappa Alpha Psi Inc. played a big role in my life in a short amount of time; this organization gave me the opportunity to attend university through a scholarship. The scholarship I was awarded was through the Fayetteville Alumni Chapter; it required letters of recommendation, a transcript, an application, and an essay on what I believe “Achievements in every field of human endeavor” means. I once received the call telling me to meet with the representative to receive a letter indicating whether I had received the scholarship. When I opened the letter, two tickets to the Kappa Scholarship Ball fell out, and when I read the letter, it said that I had been chosen to receive the scholarship from Kappa Alpha Psi Inc. The weekend of scholarship ball, my mom had planned a graduation trip for me and a couple of my friends to go to Myrtle Beach. So on the day of the scholarship dance, I drove from Myrtle Beach to Fayetteville to attend the scholarship dance; Once I arrived at the dance, I was greeted by many men from Kappa Alpha Psi Inc. When I sat at the table they had reserved for me and the other three fellows, I was approached by many men from the fraternity. That night was truly spectacular and eventful; the men who had offered me the scholarship seemed like down-to-earth, friendly people. They treated me with so much respect, talked to me about how I see my future, and told me what I could do to be a successful African American in today's society. These men set an example of achievement and in the short time we spent together, they instilled in me that I should never be satisfied with where I am and that I can always do better as long as I have the mindset of a man of action. Without this scholarship, I… by mid-paper… am at the top, but I raise the bar higher for those who are reaching the top. The men of this brotherhood set an example of success; they prove that being the best is not enough. That's why I want to be part of this brotherhood, because I want to be an example, I want to show that being good is not enough, and I want to show that being an African American male, I will not let myself be hindered by stereotypes or other preconceptions. Being able to be a part of this organization will push me to be the man I can be, instead of dragging me to a lower level; It will give me the opportunity to prove that others can do it, just like I did. Kappa Alpha Psi Inc. is the organization I want to represent, progress and be a member of because their goals and objectives represent what I stand for and I couldn't see myself joining any other fraternity.
